Omaha Hi-Lo (also known as Omaha 8 or better) is often times seen as one of the most complicated but well-loved poker games. It is a variation that, even more than regular Omaha poker, aims for action from all levels of players. This is the main reason why a once irrelevant variation, has expanded in popularity so amazingly.
Omaha/8 begins just like a regular game of Omaha. Four cards are dealt to each player. A sequence of wagering follows in which gamblers can wager, check, or drop out. Three cards are dealt out, this is known as the flop. Another sequence of betting ensues. Once all the gamblers have either called or dropped out, an additional card is revealed on the turn. an additional sequence of betting ensues at which point the river card is revealed. The players will need to make the best high and low five card hands using the board and hole cards.
This is where a few players can get confused. Contrasted to Texas Holdem, in which the board can be everyone’s hand, in Omaha hi low the player must use precisely three cards on the board, and exactly 2 cards from their hand. Not a single card more, not a single card less. Unlike normal Omaha, there are 2 ways a pot might be won: the "higher hand" or the "lower hand."
A high hand is just what it sounds like. It is the strongest possible hand out of everyone’s, whether that is a straight, flush, full house. It is the same approach in nearly every poker game.
A low hand is more difficult, but really free’s up the action. When figuring out a low hand, straights and flushes don’t count. the lowest hand is the worst hand that can be made, with the lowest value being A-2-3-4-5. Considering that straights and flushes do not count, A-2-3-4-5 is the lowest possible hand. The lower hand is any five card hand (unpaired) with an 8 and smaller. The lower hand wins half of the pot, as does the higher hand. When there’s no low hand available, the higher hand wins the whole pot.
It may seem complicated initially, after a few rounds you will be agile enough to pick up on the basic subtleties of the game with ease. Seeing as you have people wagering for the low and betting for the high, and seeing as so many cards are being used at the same time, Omaha Hi-Lo provides an overwhelming assortment of wagering choices and because you have many players trying for the high, and many battling for the low hand. If you love a game with all kinds of outs and actions, it is not a waste of your time to compete in Omaha High-Low.
